As new students or teachers, coming to a new school is always an unnerving experience. Not only are we surrounded by new people in what may be a new country, we are also faced with having to adapt to a new school and education system. As a class project, the 2008/09 MYP 5 Computer Tech class took on the challenge of rethinking the information system about the MYP Program at Copenhagen International School.
We have all undergone the feeling of being completely overwhelmed by coming to CIS on our first day of school, be it the start of the school year or halfway through January. “Old” students whisper excitedly about which NECIS team they shall be trying out for this year, which clubs they will be signing up for, or even where they are planning to go to for lunch that day. Teachers tell students to get homework assignments from Teachers Files for Students, while advisors are reminding students not to wait until the last minute to collect precious CAS Hours. Health forms are sent home for Social Overnight and Activity Week, although the two events may never be fully explained.
While all this is going on, new students are left confused, unable to process all the information being shoved at them. As students who have not only gone through the “new student phase” and who have managed to pull through those first few weeks, we chose to make this wiki as a place for all newcomers to be able to refer to for definitions of the various terms you will hear, for information about different school events, academics, and to provide answers to questions that are frequently asked, but not always answered.
Old students also have a hard time remembering all the information about life at CIS. Or you may simply want more information about a certain topic; for example, what is the big MYP project for your year-group? Maybe you want to know what the responsibilities of a Student Council representative are. Although this wiki was initially created for new students, it can be just as important and useful for old students and teachers to stay on top of the hectic CIS lifestyle.
It is without doubt that you have heard of Wikipedia, which is probably the best-known research tool/wiki today. We used the same idea when creating this website, although our focus was to make life easier for new students and teachers. We worked together to build the foundations of this wiki, to create the pages that you can view on this website. The underlying concept was a goal of making it easier for newcomers to integrate fully into life at CIS. We have put a lot of work into this project, and sincerely hope that it will aid those new to CIS, and all the old students who can’t keep track of all the information we are given.
